Airline Baggage Allowances to South Korea: Weight, Dimensions, and Excess Fees

Korean Air charges ₩60,000–₩100,000 per extra kilo on long-haul routes once you exceed your allowance, knowing your limits before you reach the check-in desk at Incheon International Airport (ICN) saves real money.

Checked Baggage: The Piece vs. Weight System

Most flights to South Korea from North America and Oceania use the piece system: you get a set number of bags rather than a total weight budget. Routes from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East typically use the weight system.

Korean Air (KE), piece system (North America):

• Economy: 2 bags, each max 23 kg, max linear size 158 cm (length + width + height)
• Prestige (Business): 2 bags, each max 32 kg
• First: 3 bags, each max 32 kg

Korean Air, weight system (Europe/Asia):

• Economy: 23 kg total
• Prestige: 32 kg
• First: 40 kg

Asiana Airlines (OZ):

• Economy (North America piece system): 2 bags × 23 kg, 158 cm linear

Jin Air (LJ) and Air Busan (BX), Korean low-cost carriers, sell checked baggage as a paid add-on only. Base fares include zero checked luggage. Add-on prices start around ₩30,000–₩50,000 per 15 kg block booked online before departure.

Cabin Baggage Rules

Carry-on size limits at ICN are enforced, especially on Korean low-cost carriers, which weigh bags at the gate.

• Korean Air: 1 bag + 1 personal item. Bag max 55 × 40 × 20 cm, max 12 kg. Personal item (handbag, laptop bag) must fit under the seat.
• Asiana Airlines: 1 bag max 55 × 40 × 20 cm, max 10 kg. Plus 1 small personal item.
• Jin Air / Air Busan / T'way Air (TW): 1 bag max 55 × 40 × 20 cm, max 10 kg. No free personal item on some fare classes, check at booking.

Liquids: the standard 100 ml per container, all in a single 1-litre transparent bag, applies at ICN and Gimpo (GMP). Duty-free liquids purchased beyond security are permitted in the sealed tamper-evident bag with receipt.

Excess Baggage Fees

This is where costs spike fast.

Korean Air excess fees (economy, international long-haul):

• Overweight (23–32 kg): ₩60,000 per bag
• Overweight (32–45 kg): ₩120,000 per bag
• Extra bag (3rd or beyond): ₩100,000–₩200,000 depending on route
• Oversized (over 158 cm linear): ₩120,000 per bag

Asiana Airlines charges similar rates: overweight bags (23–32 kg) cost ₩60,000–₩90,000 on trans-Pacific routes.

Low-cost carriers: Jin Air charges ₩10,000–₩20,000 per extra kilogram at the airport, significantly more expensive than pre-booking the same weight online.

Practical rules to avoid fees

• Pre-purchase online. Every carrier charges 20–40 pct less for extra baggage booked before check-in opens.
• Weigh at the hotel. ICN has rental luggage scales at some convenience stores airside, but by then you are paying airport rates.
• Split across passengers. Families can redistribute weight between bags at the check-in line, agents allow it at ICN without extra charge.
• Use Korea Post or CJ Logistics. If you overpack on the return leg, both companies offer airport-to-home or airport-to-hotel delivery (택배, taekbae) from around ₩4,000–₩8,000 per parcel within South Korea. CJ Logistics has counters inside ICN Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 before security.

Special Items

• Golf bags: Korean Air and Asiana treat a golf bag as one checked bag on the piece system if it fits within 158 cm linear; heavier bags incur the overweight fee.
• Surfboards / bicycles: must be declared as oversized sports equipment. Korean Air charges ₩150,000 per piece; Asiana ₩120,000–₩180,000 depending on route.
• Musical instruments: small instruments can count as the personal item if they fit in the overhead bin. Cellos and larger instruments require a purchased seat (Korean Air accepts this, call reservations directly).

Checking these numbers against your specific booking class before you pack is the single most effective way to travel to Seoul without a surprise bill at the counter.
