How to Get Miles Into Your Account
Flying JAL or Oneworld partners earns you a percentage of the miles you fly, depending on your cabin:
- First class: 150 pct of distance flown
- Full-fare business class: 125 pct
- Premium economy and full-fare economy: 100 pct
- Discounted economy fares: as low as 30 pct
Credit card transfers are the fastest route for most people. Since 2025, three major programs now transfer to JMB:
- Bilt Rewards transfers at 1:1 (best ratio)
- Capital One transfers at 2:1.5 (you send 2 Capital One miles, get 1.5 JMB miles)
- Marriott Bonvoy transfers at 3:1, with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points transferred
Important: your JMB account must be at least 60 days old before you can redeem miles. Open it early, before you need it.

Domestic Japan flights start at 6,000 miles one way, making them an excellent use of leftover miles after a long-haul redemption.
Partner airline awards use a distance-based chart. Economy on partner airlines costs 12,000 miles for routes under 1,000 miles, rising to 30,000 miles for 3,001 to 5,000 miles.
The Stopover Rule That Changes Everything
JAL Mileage Bank allows up to 3 stopovers on a single partner-airline award ticket. A stopover is any layover of 24 hours or more. You can visit three cities on one award, paying for one ticket. This is one of the most generous policies in Oneworld. Plan your route before you call.
Miles Validity: The 2025 Change
Until 2024, JMB miles expired after 36 months regardless of account activity. That policy still applies to older miles. Miles earned from January 2025 onward are valid for five years, giving you significantly more time to save up for a premium cabin award.
If you have older miles approaching expiry, any earning activity (a hotel stay, a credit card transfer, a partner purchase) does not reset the clock. The expiry date is fixed from the date each batch of miles was earned.
June 2025 Award Chart Increase
JAL raised award prices on June 10, 2025. First class awards went up by as much as 80 pct. If you see older redemption guides quoting lower prices (for example, 80,000 miles for US-Japan first class), those numbers are out of date. The current floor for JAL Suites from the US is 110,000 miles in low season.
Business class pricing held more stable, which is why it remains the program's best value for most travellers.
