What economy class passengers actually get
On most transatlantic and transpacific routes (think Tokyo to London, New York, or Sydney), ANA serves two full hot meal services. Your first meal comes shortly after takeoff; the second arrives around 1 to 1.5 hours before landing.
Each meal tray comes with a main dish, side, bread or rice, salad, and a dessert. At the start of service, the cabin crew will ask: Japanese or Western? On routes to/from Japan, the Japanese option is often a rice or noodle dish with carefully seasoned proteins. The Western option is typically a pasta or meat-and-vegetables plate.
Drinks are always free, across all classes and routes. The cart includes:
- Beer, wine, sake, shochu, and spirits
- Soft drinks, juices, tea, and coffee
- ANA's own beef consomme soup (a cult favourite on domestic routes)
On long-haul flights to North America (excluding Honolulu), Europe, Sydney, and India, ANA sets up a self-service snack station in the galley between meal services. You can help yourself to traditional arare rice crackers, fruit, and the "Aromatic Kabosu" citrus drink at any time. The rice crackers are vegan, halal, and free of the 28 major allergens listed by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
Skip the meal if you want to sleep
ANA offers a "No Thank You" option — tell the crew before the meal service and they will skip your tray entirely. This is particularly useful if you want uninterrupted sleep on a night flight from Tokyo.
Domestic flights: drinks yes, meals no
On ANA domestic routes within Japan, economy class does not include a free meal. You get complimentary coffee, green tea (hot or iced), apple juice, and mineral water. A buy-on-board trolley service sells snacks and bento boxes on many routes if you want something more substantial.

Business class: pre-order and "The Restaurant"
Business class passengers on select routes to Europe, North America, Mexico, Oceania, and Southeast Asia can pre-order their preferred main course before flying. The June to August 2026 menu features Japanese cuisine curated by chef Toru Okuda, including wagyu beef, grilled eel, and sakura shrimp croquette. You can pre-order up to 24 hours before departure via the ANA website.
Menus rotate quarterly: the next update after the June-August 2026 menu is scheduled for around August 20, 2026, covering September onwards.
Special meals: the full list
ANA offers over 25 special meal codes, all at no extra charge. Here are the most commonly requested:

Key 2025 changes to note: From December 1, 2025, ANA merged two older dietary codes into the Balanced Diet Meal (DBML): the Low Salt Meal (LSML) and Low Fat Meal (LFML) no longer exist as separate options. The Low Calorie Meal (LCML) was discontinued entirely — ANA suggests the Fruit Platter Meal (FPML) or Vegetarian Raw Meal (RVML) as alternatives.

How to order a special meal
- Log in to your ANA booking at ana.co.jp or call the ANA reservation centre.
- Select your flight and add a special meal from the list.
- Deadline: at least 24 hours before departure for flights departing Japan. For flights arriving into Japan, the deadline is 48 hours before departure.
- Some meals (Allergen-Free Meal in particular) can only be booked by phone, not online.
- Availability varies by departure airport — not every special meal is offered on every route.
Not all special meals are guaranteed on all routes. If you have a serious allergy, always confirm with ANA directly rather than relying on the website alone.
