Japan Airlines gives Economy passengers two free checked bags at 23 kg each on international flights. That covers most travellers on a Japan trip without any extra charge.

How many bags, and how heavy?
Your free allowance depends on your cabin class:

The size limit is the same for everyone: each bag must measure 203 cm or less in total linear dimensions (length + width + height), handles and wheels included. Think of a large rolling suitcase: standard 29-inch checked luggage typically measures around 160-170 cm total, well within the limit.
No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg. JAL will not accept it as checked luggage above that threshold; you would need to ship it separately as cargo.
Fees for extra bags and overweight luggage
If you need to check a third (or fourth) bag beyond your free allowance, JAL charges by route:
- North America, Europe, Oceania: approximately 20,000 JPY (around USD 130-150) per extra bag
- Asia routes (China, Korea, Southeast Asia, etc.): approximately 10,000 JPY per extra bag
Overweight fees kick in when a bag exceeds your class weight limit but stays under the 32 kg hard cap:
- Fees range from 6,000 JPY to 20,000 JPY depending on the route
- Oversized bags (over 203 cm linear) are also charged at roughly 20,000 JPY on long-haul routes
Pay at the airport check-in counter. JAL does not currently offer pre-purchase of extra baggage allowance online at a discounted rate in the way some carriers do, so if you know you will be over, budget for airport fees.
What counts toward your allowance?
Your standard free allowance covers hard or soft-shell suitcases and duffel bags. A few categories are handled separately:
- Sports equipment (skis, golf clubs, surfboards): accepted as checked baggage but size and weight rules apply; oversized pieces are charged at the oversized rate
- Musical instruments: small instruments can travel in the cabin; larger ones may need a seat or must check in as oversized cargo
- Liquids, gels, aerosols: no limit in checked bags (unlike cabin bags), but packaging rules apply for pressurised items
Your free allowance applies per person, not per booking. Each traveller on the same booking gets their own full free allowance.
Book your flight via oneworld partners and your bags still count
JAL is a oneworld member. If you earn status with American Airlines, British Airways, or another oneworld carrier, JAL recognises your elite tier. A oneworld Emerald or Sapphire card holder typically gets an extra bag or extra weight allowance on JAL flights even in Economy. Check your status card before assuming you need to pay for extras.
Checking in: domestic vs. international rules
The allowances above apply to international flights. Domestic JAL flights inside Japan use a weight system rather than a piece system: Economy passengers get 20 kg total in checked luggage (not two separate bags). Keep that in mind if you are connecting from an international arrival onto a short JAL domestic hop to Osaka or Sapporo.
At Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND), JAL operates its own dedicated terminal counters. Check-in desks open three hours before departure and close 40 minutes before for most international routes. Bags dropped after cut-off will not travel with you regardless of allowance.
