JAL online check-in opens 24 hours before departure and closes 1 hour out. Here are every deadline, app step, and airport option you need.
Online check-in for Japan Airlines (JAL) opens exactly 24 hours before departure and stays open until 1 hour before your scheduled take-off. Miss that window, and you head to the airport counter.

Online Check-In: the Fastest Route to Your Gate
Go to jal.co.jp and select "Online Check-in" from the booking menu, or open the JAL app directly. You'll need your booking reference (PNR) or e-ticket number plus your name.
Once you confirm your seat, you get a digital boarding pass. You can then:
- Add to Apple Wallet (iPhone): tap "Add to Apple Wallet" on the flight details screen. Your pass updates automatically if JAL pushes a gate change.
- Add to Google Wallet (Android): same flow via "Add to Google Wallet." Note: Google Wallet is not available for some domestic legs bundled within international itineraries.
- Save as PDF: useful if you're heading somewhere with unreliable data.
One caveat: if you change your seat after saving the pass to Wallet, the app does not auto-update. Delete the old pass and re-add it.
At the Airport: Kiosks, Counters, and Baggage Drop
If you already have a mobile boarding pass and no checked bag, go straight to security. No counter visit needed.
If you have bags to check, use the Self Baggage Drop (SBD) at major airports (Haneda, Narita, Kansai, Chubu, and select international hubs). Print your own bag tag at the kiosk, attach it, drop the bag on the belt. Deadlines still apply:
- International flights: drop bags no later than 60 minutes before departure
- Domestic flights: no later than 30 minutes before departure
Full-service counter: opens roughly 3 hours before departure at most airports. Domestic kiosks are available up to 9 hours before departure for early airport arrivals.
Print a backup — just in case
Japanese airport scanners read mobile passes reliably, but some regional and smaller airports outside Japan still prefer paper. If you're connecting through a smaller hub, print a copy at home or at an airport kiosk before your first flight.
International Flights: Give Yourself More Time
JAL's official guidance recommends arriving at the airport at least 2 hours before an international departure. Factor in:
- Immigration and security queues at busy hubs like Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND)
- Baggage drop closing 60 minutes before departure (hard cut-off)
- Boarding gate closing 10 minutes before departure (you will not be let through after this)
JAL operates international routes from Haneda Terminal 3 and Narita Terminal 2. Both have clearly signposted JAL-dedicated kiosks and premium counters (First Class, Business Class, and Sakura Lounge access) if you're travelling in a higher cabin.
What Online Check-In Does Not Cover
A handful of situations require a visit to the airport counter regardless:
- Travelling with an unaccompanied minor
- Flying with a pet in cabin
- Using a paper ticket (rare, but still issued for some group bookings)
- Flights operated by certain codeshare partners not on JAL metal — check your ticket issuing carrier
For all other standard bookings, online check-in works and the mobile boarding pass is accepted at every JAL-served major international airport.
