Linear size is length + width + height combined. A standard 28-inch suitcase typically measures around 140-150 cm, well inside the 158 cm limit.
Extra bag and overweight fees

Domestic Japan flights: new rules from May 2026
From 19 May 2026, ANA domestic Japan flights switched to a piece system matching international. Economy now gets 2 bags at 23 kg each instead of the old single-weight-bucket approach. First Class on domestic routes gets 3 bags at 32 kg each. This is a significant upgrade for domestic travellers who previously had tighter limits.
Prepay to lock in your fee
ANA lets you add extra bags online from the moment you book until 6 hours before departure. The prepaid fee is the same as the airport rate on most routes, but paying in advance saves you time at the check-in desk and avoids any risk of a currency surcharge if you are paying in a currency other than JPY or USD.

What will not travel as checked baggage
ANA will not accept any single piece over 45 kg (99 lb) or over 292 cm (115 in) linear. Items between 292 cm and 292 cm must be pre-arranged as cargo. Lithium battery rules follow standard aviation rules: spare batteries in checked bags are not permitted.
