Air France includes 1 checked bag (23 kg) in Economy Standard fares. Light fares get nothing. Extra bags cost from €45 online. Full rules inside.
If you booked a Light fare, your ticket includes zero checked baggage. If you booked Economy Standard or higher, you get one bag at 23 kg. That single distinction catches more travellers off guard than anything else about flying Air France.

What your fare actually includes
Air France sells Economy tickets under several fare brands. The name on your booking slip matters more than the cabin.
- Light / Basic: No checked bag. You pay for every piece at the airport, or online in advance.
- Standard: One bag up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
- Flex: One bag up to 23 kg, plus full change and refund flexibility.
- Premium Economy: Two bags, each up to 23 kg.
- Business: Two bags, each up to 32 kg.
- La Première (First): Three bags, each up to 32 kg.
Every bag on every fare must stay under 158 cm (62 in) total linear dimensions (length + width + height). Air France will not accept any single bag weighing more than 32 kg for check-in; it must travel as cargo instead.

Fees for extra or overweight bags
Adding a bag online before departure is always cheaper than paying at the airport counter. Air France allows online additions up to 30 hours before your flight.
Extra bag fees (online rate, approximate):
| Route | 1st extra bag | 2nd extra bag |
|---|---|---|
| Within France / Europe | €45-€50 | €45 |
| Europe to North Africa | €45-€50 | €45 |
| Europe to North America | €68 | €192 (3rd bag+) |
| Other intercontinental | €85-€150 | varies |
Airport counter prices run roughly 20-30 pct higher than online rates, so booking in advance pays for itself.
Overweight fees apply when your bag exceeds the cabin limit (23 kg in Economy, or 32 kg anywhere):
- 24-32 kg in Economy: €70-€145 depending on route
- Over 32 kg: not accepted as checked baggage at all
Oversized fees kick in at 159 cm total dimensions:
- 159-300 cm: €100-€200 depending on route
- Over 300 cm: not accepted as passenger baggage

Flying Blue status and the bag question
If you hold Air France Flying Blue Silver, Gold, or Platinum status (or SkyTeam Elite equivalent), you earn one or two extra checked bags on top of your fare allowance, depending on tier and route. This applies even on Light fares where the base ticket includes nothing. Check your status benefit page before paying for a bag you may already have.

The cheapest moment to add a bag
Add your checked bag during the original booking, not as a separate step later. The earliest you buy it online, the lower the rate Air France shows. Waiting until check-in — or worse, the airport counter — can cost 30-50 pct more for the exact same bag on the exact same flight.
Key limits to keep in mind
- 32 kg is the hard ceiling. No upgrade, no status, no workaround gets a bag above that weight into the hold as passenger luggage.
- 158 cm is the size limit. Measure length + width + height at the widest points, including wheels and handles.
- Light fares are the most common trap. They are often the cheapest options shown on booking aggregators. Adding even one checked bag online can close most of that price gap compared to Standard, so compare the total cost before buying.
- Sports gear and musical instruments follow separate rules and require prior approval. Large instruments may need a dedicated seat purchase.
